what happens at spy and I imagine elsewhere as well is this....... the home owners all around the pond all have there lawns treated with fertilizers that all wash into the pond. The nitrogen fertilizers then make the weed growth etc grow at super fast speeds and choke that place out.
Huge bass in spy back in the day before the water was treated as often. They know they are killing fish because after they treat it the stock it with 6 inch bass by the hundreds.

They treat Boone pretty much every year around this time (mid-June), usually there are signs up in the neighborhood the week prior to it as they don't want people swimming in the lake the same day. Fishing does seem to slow down for the week following the weed kill, but then again the fishing has slowed down in general at Boone due to the pressure.
I know that it is necessary in some ponds that get choked but it's a shame it hurts the fish and other lake creatures.

I ran across one at Ellis Pond in Norwood this past Sunday. It was posted no boating or fishing until June 6, so the application must have been a week or two earlier. I fished it anyway, only got one pickerel and one bass.
What a small world, I fish that place quite a bit. Theres some nice ones up in there.
It's been on my radar for a few weeks. Two weeks ago I tried to get in but a father and son had parked themselves at the boat launch. I didn't see any other convenient place to put in so I went elsewhere that day (and had a great day to boot). In the interim, they treated the pond with herbicide. All of the pads are dying. The one bass I caught was on a frog over a weed bed in the middle.
All this talk about chemicals to fight other chemicals and artificially stocking the ponds...
Sometimes I wish I could just travel back in time with all my gear to the 1600s and fish the lakes of Mass. in peace.
Hmmm you'd probably find no largemouth bass since they were introduced from NY in the early 1800s...but I know what you mean
Just got back from fishing Spy. It was a tough bite out there. Also very little weed left. It just amazes me that the people that live around Spy pond want to save the earth but it's OK to add herbicide to the pond for aesthetics only. They should have to drink the water and see how they like it.
