After months of waiting for my custom made condo friendly cartopper it is about to be shipped. The boat was made in Indiana and I had to Indiana sales tax on it. Do I need to pay double tax on it? I have a feeling I do have to pay, but I don't really know.

I'll post some pics once I hit the water.

As far as I know, If you can prove you paid sales tax in another state, they will accept that. But you have to have a receipt.

I bought my boat from a guy in NH, and had a hell of a time to register it. The bill of sale was a package boat, motor, and trailer and the woman at the counter said I needed separate bills of sales. I finally told the woman at the boat registry I'm not trying to screw anyone I just want to register my boat and give you money. I ended up paying the sales tax there for the whole package and when I went to the RMV for the trailer I had to jump through hoops there too.

Registering a boat is one of the reasons I will not upgrade it's a PITA to say the least.

Good luck with the new boat.

If Indiana has sales tax on purchases proof should be good. However changing state registration may require a separate tax.You can check on line before you go.New Hampshire doesn't charge sales tax so I'm not sure what will happen.I bought my topper in N.H. and payed sales tax to register it in Ma.They look up the value and that's what they charge you.

Hopefully it shouldn't be too bad. I won't need to change the registration because its a new boat. I'm paying tax on the new value so I think I should be all set with the bill of sale.
