With the damage done from Hurricane Sandy, our waters have changed. Navionics is looking for Cape Cod area beta testers to record and submit their sonar logs/tracks to help improve nautical charts. Qualified testers will receive a free Navionics chart. The beta testing is for SonarCharts, which adds a new layer of bathymetric data to improve the safety of existing charts. This layer is shared with all chart users whether you upload or not.

Program qualifications:
• Garmin or Humminbird units only.
• PC compatible only, no MAC users.
• Program will run through Jan 31, 2013.
• Free Chip offer valid for any current Navionics product
• One chip per user

Will Navionics come out with a Mac compatible chip system? I don't foresee myself buying a new computer just for this, but I have recently purchased a portable Humminbird fish finder for my kayak/ice fishing that can accept Navionics chips, but I have really pursued it because I read they weren't Mac compatible.

This is probably a stupid question but how exactly do you record a sonar log of an entire pond?

I would imagine gps would be involved and then they would patch together all the snippets from lots of users

depending on your plotter/sounder combo, there is a feature called sonar logs or sonar tracks. the gps has the ability to record your tracks, which keeps data such as your position and depth. Before you would record your sonar logs and download to your computer to see where you might have seen or caught fish. Soon, these sonar logs will be able to update your charts to reflect actual bottom contours. Most Humminbird, Raymarine, Simrad and Lowrance HDS plotter combos have this ability.

Navionics just updated the qualifications. Any Raymarine users qualify. And those of you who only have a MAC can also participate.

during beta testing only a PC will work. But you can still submit your recordings to us instead. MAC is in the immediate future.
