I know( well I've been told anyways ) that this is a pretty good time of year to catch bass. For whatever reason, it seems to be the opposite for me. Maybe it is because I am pretty much a plastics guy using mostly berkley power worms texas rigged or the senko. My question is, should I abandon these types of bait at this time of year? Would I be better off cranking or using the spinnerbait? I understand every body of water is different but generally speaking what do you guys think? Thanks

If your current techniques aren't catching fish, I can't see why you wouldn't try something else, especially when mosy will tell you to throw a fast moving reaction style bait, like those you mentioned.

Definitely try something different

Thanks for the suggestions. I probably stick with my usual offerings as they produce for me fairly well at least throughout the summer months. I guess I should try a little bit outside of my comfort zone.

That's how you get better at fishing. Last year I threw plastics 90% of the time. Buzz baits and spinnerbaits the rest of the time. This year I was determined to learn more. I started using crank baits and jigs. My catch rate has gone up and I don't remember the last time I didn't catch at least one fish. It's definitely worth putting in the time to learn new techniques

Anglers are going to use the lures they have success with. What do you do when your go to bait is not working? You need to be comfortable with multiple techniques. The only way to do this is to practice. I was having trouble catching fish with a crankbait and I know bass would hit it because my fishing partner was catching them on the same lure I was using. It's a confidence thing, the more you practice and try different retrieves the more confidence and success you will have. What I did was go out with just a small tackle box with crankbaits only. This forced me to get comfortable fishing crankbaits. I did this on three trips in a row and gained more confidence on each trip. The last time out I caught five bass in less than two hours and one was over three pounds. Tight lines...

Thanks for the tips/suggestions. They make sense. If I don't catch much this time of year with my go to baits then what do I have to lose by throwing something else???? Absolutely nothing at all!! I will only be gaining experience fishing new baits and be better off in the long run. Thanks again guys

Like I said on another post it is time to speed things up! There is no reason to be fishing slow now unless you want to. The one type of soft plastic I will throw this time of the year is a fluke type bait. After this wknd water temps have dropped a few more degrees and the bass should be becoming more aggresive heading into the fall feed. I find October to be one of the best months for fishing!

What is your favorite lure to throw in fall I like the last guy have fallen into the soft plastics trap killed em in spring and early summer now having trouble finding bass.

My favorite lure all year round is the spinner bait. You can fish them fast or slow, jig them or burn them and they are mostly weedless. They also come in many weights, colors, blade configurations that will offer different profiles to the bass. I also love top water fishing but it requires more specific conditions so is not always appropriate.

A good choice this time of year is to start out with a Ratltrap type bait. This will bring out the most aggresive fish. Try different retrieves to see what they want. Yo-yo, stop n go and just a steady retrieve. Have a chatterbait or spinnerbait as a back up Exclamation As the water temp drops down into the 50's put on a suspending jerkbait like a Husky Jerk. The fall bite can provide plenty of action Exclamation

Last two weeks has been back and forth. They're still adjusting to the fall turnover I think.

for whatever reason too the pickeral action has been better than it has been all year. Last two trips Ive landed more pick than anything.

Was at Webster Lake this morning with the water temp of 63. The bass are def in fall patterns...We found the bait-fish and 13 2+ pounds bass chasing them in this one cove all caught on rattletraps. At one point I had two fish hooked (one on front treble and one on back treble), hooked another in the back and reeled him in. That lasted for an intense 5 minutes then nothing for the other 4 hours besides a 6" dink...just find the baitfish and it will pay off
