Ok, I know this topic has been done to death so I apologize but I'm just trying to collect information. I'd hate to get to the tourney and find that I have an insufficient livewell.

~Bilge or aerator? Most aerators I see are for bait buckets and can't cope with the volume of a cooler. A bilge could be a serious drain on a battery, is a lawn equipment battery enough to run the bilge full time for 8 hours? If I go bilge, is 500 GPH enough? Too much?

~Cooler volume: 50 qt, 70 qt, 100qt? What is necessary?

What are some of the setups that have worked well for those of you who have run multiple cartopper tourneys?

Thanks so much and I'll (hopefully) see some of you at Upper Mystic

If you look at the pictures on my profile on page #3 you will see pics of my livewell. It is a 70 qt. Coleman Marine cooler. It has an airator built into the side of it so as to not take up space in the cooler. Bilge and aeratores work on the same principal. suck up water and spit it out. The difference being a bilge is hooked to a hose that spits it out of your boat and the aerator is hooked up to a hose that recirculates it back into the liverwell area.

Go on BPS and in the search feature type in Livewell aeratores. There is one there by mayfair that is the whole kit. It is not the best but its a start. There are other liverwll pumps there that you can configure to work in a cooler. The attwood Tsunami is one, Mayfair is another. Those buble things you see will not work. Not enough oxygen being delivered to the volume of water being used to keep 5 fish alive.
In my opinion, and that is all it is, 54 qt. is the minimum size you should have to keep 5 fish alive AND healthy longterm, well after release. Things like Ice, hydrogen peroxide and rejuvinade should be added to the water, especially from June through September. Just make sure to add the hydrogen peroxide in the right amount because too much is deadly to bass and make sure the rejuvinade or whatever else you use does not containg Hydrogen peroxide.

OK I bought a 70 qt cooler and the Mayfair kit from BPS. Last question is about a battery. I have this battery: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000BYEXO/ref=oh_details_o06_s02_i00
lying around. is that enough to run the aerator all day?

The mayfair kit is almost the same as mine and draws approximately 1 amp per hour, find the amount of amp hours the battery has and divide it by 1 thats the amount of hours it willl run the pump for so if its a 20 amp hour battery it should run it for 20 hrs. providing its a 12 volt battery

My only concern is that is a cranking only battery

read the specs..

however if that is all you are running off that battery it may work

Thank you for all of the info Neil. The aerator is all I intend to run off of that battery. And I can do 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off or some such to help conserve power.

Run them all day, especailly in the summer months. That battery is more then enough. I run mine all day on a lawn mower battery and have plenty to spare at the end of 8 hours.
