Today at Dick's a guy came up and asked me if I was an experienced fisherman. I said I knew a little bit.

Then he asked me which of two rods would be better for an all around fresh water combo. I was surprised, I was able to generally explain, the difference between, graphite, fiberglass, and composite rods, and the general significance of bearing count and spool size for spinning reels.

He was grateful for the information, and I enjoyed being able to help him make a better informed decision. I was in his place very recently.

Thanks for all the information y'all have provided me.

Cheers,
Patrick

It's amazing the info you pick up over time and don't even know it.

That is my understanding. Rods such as Ugly Stiks are hybrids. They are made from layers of glass and graphite. In the case of Ugly Stiks they have a fiberglass tip also.

Of course I'm new to this, so I may be wrong.

Yes, you are right. Glass and graphite, very soft tip. Only good for certain applications, not an all around rod.
