The Holiday Season has begun now,Thanksgiving behind us(Tell me this hasn't been the QUINTISENTIAL New England Autumn)And of course with Christmas approaching I wonder, are either of these CORPORATE MONSTERS(I mean that in the most affectionate way) any better for us localz' than,oh...let's say...'BeaverFeverBaits' "?! I say HELL NO !
...we can agree for the most part things are pretty messed up with the economy and I can't think of a better present for you or or your family....... you know---a nice set of weights(New*MassLawComliant) or a COOL NEW top-water lure ? !And on top of it, it would help out a couple of GREAT GUYS that some of you MAFFERS have even spent Sunday's fishing with in the 2011 season...Spend some of 'your' cabela's or BPS money this Christmas with Damon and Dan INSTEAD and in the process----they're both TOO DAMN MODEST to shamelessly self promote---So I'LL DO IT ! hahahahahahahahah

For a small tackle/bait store it's hard to beat Arlington Bait and Tackle. I grew up in that neck of the woods and still stop by occasionally when I leave work. There's a hell of a lot of stuff in that small shop. Now that ice season is coming I'll get most of my bait there, great bait/prices. As for other stops I'll hit Dick's or place an order from Tackle Warehouse or Cabelas.

I like D&G Bait&tackle in Cherry Valley/Leicester ma---The Owner Dave has been open for 30+ years and has been supplying not only fishing equipment but ALSO he's a full service hunting equipment specialists...dozens of guys pre-order specially made arrows from him every hunting season.UNLIKE the box stores---guys like Dave have this thing they do not---PERSONAL SERVICE ---'taught me about my magnets in my new baitcaster...ya know what the kid at walmart one block away from me said...no kidding here"What's a baitcaster"?...and there ya go !
In 2012 private bait shops in Massachusetts will NO LONGER be providing fishing liscs. Which is yet ANOTHER reason I'll be going private...he loses that stupid nominal state fee they previously paid him...which would be OK if he wasn't losing 1,000 times over NOT TO MENTION the commerce lost when his guys used to come in and pick up incidentals and impulse items...this SUCKS for them ...

Last year I fished a bunch in New Hampshire, and I found out that Roach's Sporting Goods in Porter Square (Cambridge) sells NH fishing licenses. I asked him about Mass licenses, and he said that they don't sell them because he had to 'buy' all the licenses from MA and they wouldn't refund him if they didn't sell all of them.

The state has to work with the small private stores to make it work...in NY, you can get a fishing license almost anywhere that sells fishing tackle without any silly stipulations, and that makes sense to me.

That being said...I like to support local business. I live about a mile from Arlington B&T, so they have my vote. Roach's in Cambridge is also a good shop, more hunting stuff, but decent fishing gear.
