What's the retrieve on a popper? When is it a good idea to use a popper?

depends on the bite if they want it slow fish it real slow, you can sometimes tell if u pop it n let it sit for about 5-10 seconds and they hit it. sometimes they wont hit it untill u fish it real fast. in the morning or late afternoon when its real calm is usually when ill throw it, or if its decently calm and you see a lot of topwater action around u ill try it. just expierment a little the fish will tell u what they want.

I think overcast days or low light conditions may be the best since fish can be shy. I like frequent yet erratic short jerks (enough to make a splash) with a brief pause every so often.

if the bubbles stay on the water, it's a good topwater day

A VERY interesting theory. Take a cue from nature...nice!
