Here is a calculator I found on another forum. If you put in length and girth and species, it will give you an estimate of weight. For guys like me who don't carry a scale, could be useful. I tend to guess shy when it comes to weight.

Cool.Heres one that works on just about any fish, and can be done in the field. measure the fishes girth at its widest point then take the total length. The formula is GxGxL divided by 800.I've checked this out and was suprised how accurate it is.
an example: Bass 22" long girth 15" So 15x15=225x22=4950 divided by 800=6.1875 lbs

EDIT: I should have said I've heard it works on all fish,I've only tried it with a couple bass vs. a rapala digital

did I miss a contraversy?

there have been a few conversations involving the weighing of fish without scales lately...

my opinion is buy the scale...it costs about the same as 3 packs of senkos!!

Absolutley. This is good when an estimate is wanted but for one reason or another the scale isnt around.I wouldnt call it perfect, nothing I'd bet on.But that formula is close, give it a try for the fun of it and check it to your scale.

Agreed. And if you happen to be like me and still don't have a scale, just give the measurements you actually took.

yessir. Case in point, I saw a 21.5" bass the other day that weighed 3 lbs 5 oz the other day, measured w/ a tape measure and my scale (which is right on), according to that calculator, that fish should have been over 5 1/2 pounds...

not trying to start another weight argument. I just don't carry a scale, so I put this address into my phone and can guesstimate weights out there.

Thats a pretty cool calculator. Also this is an exact quote form that link, and I think they word it perfect!

"* PLEASE NOTE: This is an estimate only. Fish come in different shapes and sizes, and can vary greatly, just as humans of the same age/sex/height. By nature, this is a rough estimate only, and will give an average, approximate weight. It is not meant to be 100% accurate."
