In looking at the photo of that fish it looks a lot heavier than 30lbs. I wonder what type of scale they used to weight it?

My mother has a Koi pond and the Koi that she has are now very large, not as big as this fish, but she does have fish over 10lbs with a couple that are over 20 easy.

If you look closely at the fish in proportion to the man holding it that fish should weigh about 50 or 60lbs.

there is a lot of buzz going around claiming it is a fake pic. but it's hard to tell.

I swear a lot of news organizations get weights wrong or just don't know enough to report on such stuff. It definitely does look bigger than 30lbs.

Could be 30 kilos, or over 60 pounds. It *is* France, after all =)

The picture does look pretty unreal. Hard to say if it's a fake or not.

I think the English translation of this catch is off...30kg(60.6lbs) seems to be more accurate.

I did some research on this guy... apparently he is a professional carp fisherman see this link:

http://www.colinmaire.net/mises-en-avant/interview-raphael-biagini/

Also Koi are domesticated ornamental food fish which theoretically can grow to be 30kg and larger.

The fish pictured in the news story is an "Orenji Ogon" (Metallic orange) Koi. See this link for details: http://www.cnykoi.com/koiid/main.asp

What I find amazing about this story is that they released this fish back into the wild because a fish that size and with that kind of coloration is worth fortune to an aquarium or private collector.

Also noteworthy is the brilliance of the color on the fish. They can only really maintain that type of "shine" if someone is feeding it koi food with color enhancers. Which may also explain why the fish is so "tame" that he could hold it up like that for the photo.

Few things to note..

IN most of Europe..people will not keep a carp, any carp if they are professional anglers. Some countries eat them of course..but for the angling community it is catch and release only.

Many carp caught are in man made lakes, this one is probably one of the same. Fishing in England, and especially France is much different then you guys view it here. Many carp waters are man made, with the largest being in France with carp being caught to 96 pounds now.

It is most likely 30 pounds. The reason it looks large is because of the photo angles and the holding of the fish. These anglers are extremely practiced in holding and posing, trust me. I like how they say "After an impromptu photoshoot"...Look at the guy, yeah that isn't a practiced pose, that's off the cuff...suuuure. Smile

As for why it is so calm..it took 10 minutes to reel in. From personal experience with carp fishing and fish to 35 pounds..patience is key to the fight. Once netted most carp are tired and put up little resistance on the mat.

As for the color and shine..chances are it is fed, most carp waters are. Particularly on high protien boilies and/or pellets. Which also accounts for the round belly. Most wild carp are longer and more slender. A 30 pound river carp for instance might be slim and muscular where a 30 pound lake fed carp would be shorter but round. This is due to not having to travel miles daily for food. This is backed up by the " He spent 6 years trying to catch the fish." Which means it was in the same place for 6 years, at least. Meaning it was in a private, fed and stocked lake.

That said it doesn't mean it isn't an impressive catch..but I always like how the media plays with our heads Smile

I just took a photo today to show what I had spoke of a bit here..the fish in this picture is only about 6 pounds but using a good angle it looks an easy 10-15. That is the trick. We work hard at making our fish look good!

and really..I want to fish your mom's pond!... I'd love a 20 pound Koi in my photos heh !
