I just got a kayak and will use it on the ponds and lakes of South East MA. I have been fishing salt water for the past several years, but plan on trying for some SM and LM Bass for a change.
Setting up a kayak is interesting, lots to think about.
If you were going to try a new pond or lake, what lures would you have with you to use with a spinning rod?

I face this scenario all the time. Factors include depth, water clarity, cover and structure. And these are just the basics! Cover the entire water column until you find fish. Depending on the time of season have a rod riggged with a topwater bait, a crankbait or jerkbait and a jig or a worm. Yeah, have a Senko ready also! Smile

I always have a skirted jig cut down about 3/4 of an inch usually black and blue with a brush hawg as a trailer depending on length of the hawg i sometimes cut it down a bit. Then i would also have a lipless crank bait in usually crawdad color red and black or a pumpkinseed and i remove the rear hook when around alot of cover so when i burn it if it hits some branches or any cover when the tail end comes back down it dont get snagged up. A chatter bait crank baits and buzz baits and of course a stick worm cause when all else fails your almost guaranteed to get one on that. These are the main baits i use when finding fish quickly flip the jig in and out of cover burn the cranks and make alot of noise on top with the buzz baits. Another thing i do is use a spinner like a jig with a trailer and just flip it around you would be surprised how effective it is with the blades falling and flashing. Good luck out there man and have fun.

normally i would say use your confidence baits!

your going to get a lot of answers. i fish alot of ponds that are weedy muddy! so jigs, frogs, weedless lures is my game! some guys may fish sandy clear ponds. others may fish "power lures". power lures i mean, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, crankbaits. im a finesse angler. i pound an area hard with slower moving baits.

look a depth map! if its a shallow pond with out much depth change then i would look for visible structure. logs, docks, weeds.

if it has some depth change. then youll want to target points, humps, channels. but the logs docks will also have bass as well!

get a fish finder as well! you can get alot of action by fishing submerged structure. unless the water is very clear then youll need fish finder to see bottom.

little holes not marked on a chart can be your little hot spot!

now lures!! id bring tubes for smallies and clear sandy bottom ponds!

senkos, rubber worms small swimbaits spinnerbaits, crankbaits. texas rig plastics kick butt, thats how i started. culprit worms. loved em!

basic stuff for a begginer freshwater angler. oh husky jerks are awesome! ive caught a lot of fish on the lures.

Thanks for the ideas -it's good time to make lists, look at catalogs and online, and go to fishing shows.
I can't wait to get fishing, cabin fever is bad this year.
