Looking for a few opinions regarding recommended rod action for a topwater/jerkbait rod. For length, I'm fine with 6'6'' to 7'. I'm 6'2'', but would probably still ere more on the shorter side. Anyway, in terms of rod action, opinions seem to vary from mod-fast even up to x-fast. I realize some of it will always come down to personal preference, although some characteristics of rod action aren't really up for debate (e.g. more moderate action is better for crankbaits/trebles). I know some rod designers go with mod-fast in their jerkbait/topwater rods (e.g. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Wright__McGill_Skeet_S-Curve_Casting_Rods/descpage-WMTCR.html or AG Veracity 6'6''). In some ways the moderate-fast makes sense to me, in that you'd be getting the best of both worlds, or at least a decent compromise. The rod is still fast enough to easily work a jerkbait or walk a spook, but the more moderate action would help once you hook a fish on the trebles. Does that sound plausible, or anyone think that's way off?

One added benefit of going mod-fast for me is that it would be a better rod for throwing cranks in a pinch as well. I fish the occasional squarebill or lipless crank, but have yet to buy a dedicated cranking rod. So a more moderate action rod would be better than the current medium power, fast action I'm currently throwing them on.

Sounds like you've pretty much figured it out. It's hard to find one rod to throw top water, jerks and cranks in a pinch, but the Denali Murphy jerkbait special is very close. It'll walk the dog, handle 110's and works great for square bills.

imo you don't want a rod with an extra fast tip for topwater or jerkbaits. you want something with give and a parabolic bend.

it's a lot easier to walk a bait with a moderate or MF tip than XF.

and jerkbait rods are meant to snap back into place to impart the action on the slack line.

glass or composite is heavy. i use a dobyn's champion 684CB rod for the trifecta - jerkbaits, smaller topwater, and lighter square bills.
great balance and a rare graphite rod with the proper bend for these applications.

I totally agree with Chuck. I have this Denali jerkbait rod, and it's one of my favorites. 6' 8" medium action moderate tip. Really light! I pair it with a curado 50e. Retails for about $190, order it through Tackle Warehouse and get the free shipping

Yes, Regional Sponsorship. Unfortunately no I can't "hook it up." Being a newer up and coming company Denali's end game is get into as many store and dealers as possible. They frown apon "hooking it up" because it directly affects the dealers they are trying to land and support. I would love to be able to hook up my friends, just can't. The best bet right now would be is to get them through Tackle Warehouse with the free shipping. I extended this offer is the past and it still stands, Anyone interesting in checking out any my line up of rods, just message me.

I'm gonn agree with meat here... the Denali rod is amazing... as well as a bunch of their other products. they do frown apon the hooking up deal.. its all about growth and most should see that in the business world, "hooking up" doesnt help the company much. great products though and nothing but awesome customer service

oh i thought that was usually part of a sponsorship where those with it had a discount code they gave out freely. i've seen it on here a few times for a bunch of other companies like powell and kistler.

doesn't that help growth if giving out a 1 time discount means getting someone into a product for good? or i guess that typically doesn't pan out and people en up not coming back?

I've used a "discount" to purchase a couple rods in the past and it has led to my friends buying that same brand. Not many people will purchase a $200 rod without being able to try it out and not many places carry many different brands of $200 rods. I'm not looking for a discount by any means but they make good business sense if used correctly.

Good luck with your tourneys!
