I'll bet you were whipping that rod trying to get that lure out, right? Don't do that... I have the best luck just slowly cranking the lure almost to the branch and then just "popping" it over. Works really well with worms and jigs, but a crankbait tossed well into a tree is usually a goner.
It sure is an addicting sport. I left it for five years and now, just months after resuming fishing I already own about 20 pounds of tackle and am looking for a boat.
You'll find that over time, and with lots of time on the water your catch ratio will go way up. Keep your hooks sharp, set your hook on anything that might feel like a bite...after all, hooksets are free... and fish as much as you can, you'll quickly notice that you're losing fewer fish.
