my son and I got out for our 4th trip.new to boating new to bass fishing.we got some crappie and pickerel, we had four bass on but lost them, our hook setting is suspect.I have a new respect for you guys who go out and catch them on a reg.basis.last week we broke a 100$ rod trying to get a 20$ lure out of a tree. saved the lure though.duh.at this point I should not even own a 20$ lure.ha,ha,also met the EP he wasn't happy that our reg.numbers didn't contrast enough from the boat color. funny thing is I can't wait to get out ther next week.never know what will happen on the next cast

I'll bet you were whipping that rod trying to get that lure out, right? Don't do that... I have the best luck just slowly cranking the lure almost to the branch and then just "popping" it over. Works really well with worms and jigs, but a crankbait tossed well into a tree is usually a goner.
It sure is an addicting sport. I left it for five years and now, just months after resuming fishing I already own about 20 pounds of tackle and am looking for a boat.
You'll find that over time, and with lots of time on the water your catch ratio will go way up. Keep your hooks sharp, set your hook on anything that might feel like a bite...after all, hooksets are free... and fish as much as you can, you'll quickly notice that you're losing fewer fish.

I did the same thing to one of my poles last month and I've been fishing for yrs.my lure was only $6 and I was hung up on bottom.whatever I was snagged on was coming up but was to much weight. Sometimes we don't think. Just better to cut the line sometimes.
