The final regular tournament of the year will take place on October 8, at Norton Reservoir in Norton, MA.
It's the beginning of the fall transition, so it's been tough at a lot of spots lately, but hopefully soon the bass begin their pre-winter gorging and we end the season with a slobfest.
(There will be additional tournaments, for sure, but they will be more last-minute and different formats.)
This tournament is open only to those fishing from human-powered vessels (kayak, canoe, raft, etc.).

PARTICIPATION AND ELIGIBILITY

FORMAT
a. This is a five-fish limit, CPR (catch, photo, release) tournament series.
b. Each tournament will be 8 hours long, weather permitting.
c. Eligible fishing areas will be listed on the event page and gone over prior to the start of each tournament
d. No pre-fishing allowed two days prior to each event.
e. Artificial lures only, no exceptions.
ELIGIBLE SPECIES
a. Largemouth Bass
b. Smallmouth Bass
SCORING
a. The default unit of measurement is length, no exceptions. All fish will be rounded DOWN to the nearest quarter inch.
b. Highest aggregate length wins.
c. Minimum length for a bass is 8 inches.
d. In the case of a tie, the tie-breaker goes to the person with the longest fish. In the case of a tie for longest, the tie-breaker will then be the next longest fish, etc.
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
a. These are CPR (catch, photo, release) tournaments. A digital camera is required equipment.
b. You will need a Hawg Trough or equivalent (no flat measuring boards). See the Files section of this page for purchase links to acceptable measuring boards.
c. The numbers and lines on your measuring board must be black (or sufficiently darkened to contrast with the board) and clearly visible in each photo.
d. A PFD (i.e. life vest) must be worn at ALL times.
PHOTO REQUIREMENTS
a. Each angler will be given a unique identifier at registration, which must be clearly visible in each photograph.
b. All fish must be photographed facing left, dorsal fin up (the dorsal fin does not need to be in the up position).
c. Photographs must be taken from an angle close to directly above the fish. Photographs taken at a more severe angle are subject to deductions.
d. The bass’s mouth can be open no more than one inch and must be touching the measuring board’s “lip†or “fence.â€
e. You may use your fingers to pinch the mouth closed as long as the fish’s eye is visible and you can clearly see that the lip is touching the “lip†of the board.
f. Any bass whose mouth is open more than one inch will result in a half-inch deduction.
g. Tails must be relaxed, centered, and not excessively pinched.
h. Your kayak (or canoe, raft, etc.) must be visible in all photographs.
i. You may restrain your fish with a clip or fish grips (side of the mouth ONLY), or leave the hook in the fish’s mouth (though this is potentially dangerous and not recommended).
PAYOUTS
a. A minimum of two places plus lunker(s) will be paid out.
b. Example of Payouts (based on 10 anglers and a pool of $500):
1st Place: $200
2nd Place: $120
3rd Place: $80
Lunker: $100

Well, that does it. Our first ever tournament series is done!
Ten of us fished Norton Reservoir today. Great turnout! The weather was nice (for October). The day started calm and foggy...and stayed that way for about three hours, I think. When the fog cleared, I'm pretty sure all of us were surprised to find out where we actually were compared to where we thought we were! I know I was about a half-mile off course. Haha.
The bite was tough if you were looking for bass. Only two limits were caught. Some of us found plenty of pickerel, though. Valber caught 14! I caught at least half that.
We paid out three spots, but Donald Davis​ was kind enough to donate a $25 Bass Pro Shops gift card, so that went to the 4th place angler, which was Chris Diranian​. He had three fish for 43.75 inches.
Third place went to Michael Andreasen​, who hauled in four bass that went 57.5 inches.
If we had an Angler of the Year category, Donald Davis would certainly take the crown. He won three regular tournaments this year, plus our night tournament. He placed 2nd once, as well as 3rd, and he took lunker four times!
Well, add another 2nd place finish to that list! Don not only caught a limit, but he culled a few times. His five went 75.5 inches.
Hell of year, bud! =)
I caught my fifth fish with about two hours left in the tournament—and then my phone died. I had about 67 inches at the time, which I thought might be good for 2nd place. I contemplated heading back to the launch to charge the phone for a bit, but decided to keep fishing and see what happens. That was a good call, because shortly after I hooked up with a 20.75-inch slob! She went 4.11lb.
Luckily Don was nearby and he was kind enough to let me borrow his phone to take a photo. Thanks again, dude! (I know deep down he kind of hates himself for it. Haha.) That fish bumped me up to 77.5 inches, good enough for 1st place and lunker!
And there you have it. Probably a bit poorly written, but I'm in a rush.
This was a great first year! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to one of our events! No drama, no fights, no egos. You're all awesome!
As I mentioned before, we still have more tournaments planned. If the weather cooperates, the next one will be on October 22. It'll be a "zone" tournament, meaning that we'll quarter the lake, and each angler will be restricted to one zone every two hours. It'll be a random draw. If you start in section A, you'll move to B after two hours. If you start in C, you'll move to D, then A, then B, etc.
Major League Fishing does something similar. Should be a good time! We'll probably run it mid-morning till late afternoon, like 10 AM till 6 PM. Something like that. We'll nail down the details soon.
Anyway, thanks again, fellas! It's been a great year! And thanks for the gift. That was awesome! I REALLY appreciate it. =)
