I'm thinking of having a Kayak tourney at Cleveland Pond in Ames Nowell State Park next spring. There used to be tourneys there when i was young up until the mid 80s and the fishing was excellent.I fished there yesterday and the weeds were incredibly thick, other then near the dam there was zero open water.I'm wondering if anyone has been there in April or May the last few years and wether or not the weeds are just as horrible that early in the year. Thanks in advance.

A kayak tourney would be very possible in April. The whole back 2/3s of the pond is 3' or less. I have fished there a few times in the Spring the last few years. Did OK, nothing special though.

Yeah, if you have it early in the season it may be doable. I've caught a few nice bass there fishing from shore. Biggest over 5lb. There has to be some monsters in there that have never seen a lure! You have to lug the yak a ways though to get to the water. Gate is kept locked due to the park no longer being staffed.

I live about 2 minutes from that pond. They are right, if your gonna do a tourney there it has to be very early in the year, that place gets so choked so fast. That being said I've dragged my kayak in there midsummer and fished topwater and with rubber worms and had some luck, nothing huge but consistent action. A few of my friends have gotten big ones there. It is a bucket brigade hot spot but I imagine they can't do much damage with the limited shore access.
