how far will a feeding bass come up for a lure, for example if i am using a lure that wakes or rides the surface and a bass is sitting on the bottom roughly how deep until the fish notices 5 10 15 feet and ideas?

Lots of variable. How active is the bass? What is the water clarity? What are the weather conditions ( cloud cover, wind ect)?. Smallies up on Lake Winnipeasaukee will come off the bottom in 30+ feet to smack a top water or spinnerbait. I had Largies coming out of 15' in Maine 2 years ago to take a slammer on the surface.

Like Rich said I've had smallies at winni and Candlewood come up and hit a spinnerbait or fluke worked on the surface over 20-40' of water
