I was up in the Rangeley Lakes Region of ME over the weekend. It is certainly not the best time to flyfish for trout and salmon, but it is the time I had available. Our group headed to the Rapid River which is managed as a trophy brook trout river. The salmon are plentiful as well. A few years back, somebody illegally introduced smallmouth bass to the area. I love catching smallmouth, but not here. The number of small smallies caught was disappointingly high. These are aggressive fish that out compete the native species for the same food source. People are encouraged to take any caught smallmouth and throw them on the bank to die. The fact is, they seem to have taken a significant foothold.
WHy do selfish idiots take it upon themselves to "fix" nature? It truly boggles my mind.
