A heavier weight is definitely going to help in deeper water. Try fishing in 30+ with a 1/4oz..in 3' swells, your not going to feel much. I would use 1oz plus most of the time when fishing deep..go lighter as you go shallower...but if its windy, go as heavy as you need to so you can feel whats going on down there

To be honest over the years I havent throw a crig much, but every now and then use it..most times I would rather throw a tube with a ball head and exposed hook...they make those in 1oz+ now, years ago some guys were making em themselves.

7' + baitcasting rod, if u try braid..try experimenting with your drag as well..dont crank it down, let it slip some so you dont rip the fish's head off or more than likely tear a gapping hole in its mouth

Hey Rich, I use a spinng rod made by Gary Loomis, its his new co. I think its called Temple something. Its 7'6" Heavy and its only $100. This rod casts a mile.

temple fork?

i agree about the tube. i would rather throw heavier tubes on a baitcaster. i have some of the heavier heads and they work well.

Though I don't Carolina rig often, I have and still do occasionally just as everyone on this forum has offered in technique & method. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm on pro staff (whatever that means) for PowerTeam Lures and can purchase plastic baits for all kinds of rigging (Carolina, drop shot, Texas rig, shaky tail, or soft swimbaits) on my discount. To see what they have to offer go to www.powerteamlures.com. I, also, wanted to remind you that All Star rods use to or still does, I'm not sure, manufacture an excellent 7' Spinning rod designed for Carolina rigging. Of course, I've used it for what I like to do, pitching texas rigged tubes or worms in heavy cover or skipped under brush or docks. Excellent rod.
