As I'm trying to get my feet wet (figuratively speaking) on bass fishing, I am currently stuck on land. Does anyone have a handful of decent shore spots within reasonable driving distance of the Weston/Waltham area (20-25 minutes or so) that they would be willing to share?
I agree. There are good spots around Southboro and Westboro which would be about 25 mins from Weston. A-1 Stump Pond (we call it "Stumpy") is in Westboro as is Chauncy which is right off Rt. 30.
A good place to fish at the Sudbury Reservoir is a place we call "The Horseshoe". It's in Southboro near the Route 85/Route 9 intersection (close to St. Marks School). There is limited parking on the side of the road before and after the bridge but you can fish right off the bridge on either side or you can take the trail into the woods and find a few good spots with access. I've never had much luck here, but my husband has had success every time he's fished here. Here's a link that might help you:

Even though we live in Holliston we never fish at Lake Winthrop. I have always found it crowded and I don't like the idea that you have to pay to fish (or swim or use the facility for any reason). I don't know what it is, but there is something that really grates me about paying to fish somewhere when there are so many spots where we can fish for free.
Maybe being a resident of Holliston I am biased..with all of the high taxes this town keeps dumping on us, at least they should let us use the lake for free!

I fish at winthrop all the time, i am not really sure what you mean by pay to fish. Obviously you need a license but other than that i have never given the town a dime to fish on the lake.
if you live there and never fish it, you are missing out and should probably give it a shot. If you are referring to having to have a parking permit or whatever, you really dont need one if you park closer to the boat ramp on the pleasure point side, or there is a side parking lot with a crappy boat ramp on the stoddard side accessible by lake shore drive.

larrylunker..the first time we went to Lake Winthrop in Holliston we went through the main entrance (where the beach is) and someone stopped us and said we needed to pay to get in. I told her we were just there to fish not use the beach and she said it didn't matter, we still had to pay.
We didn't know about the boat ramp on the other side of the lake but we did try that a few days ago and had no luck. We don't have a boat so all of our fishing is done from shore..maybe if we had a boat we'd have better luck.
