Like almost everyone else I am heading out on the open water a lot earlier than normal this year! I have been seeing a lot of what's recommended for this time of year, but does anyone know of any kind of fishing highly discouraged for this season, or is it worth trying a little bit of everything to find whats working?
I'll definately be trying whats recommended but at the same time want to make sure I'm not wasting time on whats known not to work...

Cold water fishing is hit or miss. There are a couple of other posts on this topic. Just keep trying various baits until something works 
Fish are schooled up and you can go for long periods without a bite and then they will come one after another! If you are going out in a boat this is where electronics pay off
