Welcome to the site and to the sport!
As for locations, I don't know your neck of the woods too well so I can't directly comment there but I'm sure some other people here will be able to help with that and check out the link I am going to provide below for some help with locations from the state. Theres also a really cool feature on this website which incorporates a map view with lakes/ponds/rivers and with user submitted trips and reviews. Just click the Map View tab or the Find Trips tab to get started.
As for resources: one good resource is the masswildlife website to learn all about local stuff. From regulations to locations to fish:

Another good resource is the internet in general and the library/bookstore. There are some good books for beginners and I think I remember someone on this site recommending a kids how to book to an adult because it was really good for all beginners. I think its called "Kids Gone Fishin" but not 100% sure on that one.
The internet offers lots on info too of course. One site I like is the bassresource.com site. It even has a bass fishing for beginners section that might be a good place to look for you if bass fishing interests you.

Good luck!
