so first time largemouth fishing at night, last night. i usually do all my striper fishing at night and figured the larger largemouth would be out at night too.

long story short i got absolutely lit up by mosquitos despite some waders/ long sleeve shirt/ facemask/ bandana/ citronella wrist bands. also lots of large animals walking around me, maybe deer or coyotes. got spooked and left in 5 minutes.

wanted to ask what you guys use to keep the bugs out. i heard that bens makes a 100% deep repellent. also any crazy sasquach encounter stories to share. Razz

I prefer not to use sprays so I opt for ThermaCell Insect Repellent. Its powered by a small butane cartridge, and creates about a 10ft diameter coverage against bugs. Its about the size of a cell phone or GPS. When i'm fishing from shore i just snap it to my pak, and when out on the water I strap it to my Yak or Canoe. Works well, and its not costly...runs about $20 @ Walmart. Keep in mind to bring extra butane cartridges. Hopes this helps!

I get ribbed for this a lot, but I swear by "Avon SKIN SO SOFT Bug Guard Plus" in the pump spray bottle. It's a combination bug repellant and sunscreen, which is a plus for me as I prefer less than more stuff to carry around. The small bottle fits easily in my tacklebag, or mesh pocket on the kayak, or the pocket in my PFD, etc, etc, etc. I keep several on hand in all of these locations as well as in the glove compartment, the back of the truck, and in the shed in the back yard so that one is readily accessible when needed. They seem to last forever and keep on working. While the wife isn't crazy about the smell (I think they have scented if needed), I kinda like it and it doesn't seem to bother the fish......and it leaves my skin feeling silky smooth at the end of a long hot day under the sun LOL.

i sucked it up and went with traditional bug spray that didn't smell terrible. log sleeves and pants as well. i spray some on my hat too. i hate when those bastards buzz around your ears.

Ever have bats fly into your pole and around your head night fishing, I have it's no fun :p but makes things interesting. I still won't use bug spray tho I make my own

I have noticed to Mosquitos are most active from like 7:00 pm to a bout 10 pm then 5am to about 7 am at least that's how it is at long pond dracut

HaHa... Good stuff. I thought I was the only one getting spooked. The bats get me every time. They come in out of nowhere, super fast, and danger close.

I would definately get a LED head lamp for the other visitors.

I hate the bats. I dont worry about much out there but the bats freak me out a tad. They echo your lures and line and I have been hit by them as well.

But the bats are good they eat the bugs lol lesser of two evils I guess. Bats which you can't repel or bugs which you can

No Bigfoot stories, but I'd love to hear some! Very Happy

I've seen some large hairy creatures while fishing. I dont want to talk about it. I'm trying to erase her from my mind.

I do all my fishing at night due to my schedule and I never wear bug repellant and don't have too many issues but when I go out in dayliggt hours s*** like this happens to me Sad

Got bit by something while fishi g in maine last week and it got really infected. Left work at 430 yesterday to go to the er and after a night of iv drips and more needles than I care to remember I finally got some sleep then woke up to a horrible cold breakfast and the dr lanced my leg and drained a ton of bloody puss. Friggin sucked ass and the lidocaine shot did nothing cause I felt every scalpel slice and squeeze and now I'm off my feet til Friday, no work no fishing. Moral of the story? Offer bugs some orbit gum before they bite you to clean up that dirty mouth and avoid infections

Thanks Brooksy I was just about to have breakfast.

I use bug spray. Roger had the off dry or smooth or something. I'm getting that from now on. I like bats and I've definitely scared myself into leaving.

Jeezus, that's nasty looking. With all the stories about flesh eating bacteria these days the doctor must have been crapping himself.

The nurses were all impressed that I WALKED into the er and said that pain was only a 2 rather than 10 lol. You should see under the bandage, its a hole as fat around as a sharpie where the initial bite was then a 2 inch scalpel incision where the dr cut me to.open it up and drain. Very. Painful and ugly stuff
