February Ice PIG!!!
So I decided to push the limits today and head out on the ice after a morning full of running around. I had previously put in about 15 hours on the ice searching for Larry- a true beast to kick the year off. I landed on the ice around 1:00 pm today and worked an area to the left of my launch. With the warmer temps I didn't go beyond a comfort zone of 3-4inches of ice closer to the shoreline. After about 2 hours I had about 5 tip-ups and 2 bass. I moved a couple traps around and waited for another hour without any activity. I towed the sled to furthest trap to start packing up on what I thought was another Larryless trip. After I picked up that trap I looked up and saw the trap near an orange float pop up (this was thw trap that I had set with a 6 inch shiner)- alright, a chance at another fish I thought to myself. I got there and started to retrieve the line and noticed that roughly 30 yards of ice braid had been pulled off the reel. When I starting pulling in the line I knew it was a big ass fish!!! About 10 feet from the hole I saw a massive bass coming towards me through the 3 inches of ice. I had it at the hole and all I saw the mouth of a Pig and snatched it!!! To say that joy filled my veins is an understatement! Around 16 hours on the ice and finally I got the one I was looking for- WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I got Jen to come down to the launch to take some photos and see the fish. The bass ended up weighing 6 pound 3 ounces and measured 22 inches......a nice way to kick off the 2012 Calendar! We let Larry go and I packed up shop....possibly for the year on the ice- what a nice way to end it!!!!
