Charles River - Needham
Got back onto the Charles for the first time since July. The water levels are low but reasonable, the water is still dark and murky but the weeds have died back considerably. Things started out promising around 11 AM with a pick and a small bass on a crankbait and spinner bait respectively. Worked my way upstream alternating between the two baits without success. Spied a patch of lilypads and decided to throw the frog. Small bass on. Okay, so now it's three fish on three different baits. Continued upstream, now throwing three different baits. More of nothing for the next several hours. Around 4:00 decided to turn around and start back. Spied another patch of lilypads. First cast of the frog, bang, fish on, a small bass. So I decide to work the area. Soon another fish on, this time a good one, but it gets off because yours truly is still over-eager on the frog hook set. Next cast, another fish on, and another good one. This time I breathe out, breathe in, and then set the hook. 2lb 12oz, not bad. I worked the area for a while longer and had a bunch of other hits on the frog but no hookups. At least I found the fish and know where to go next time out.
Nice fish! I just got back from the Charles myself, but on the lower basin. Only got dinks.
I plan on throwing a frog tomorrow, have a spot in mind where the frog bite should still be on.
