8/15/13 - Upper Mystic Lake W/ Shawn
I had the pleasure of fishing with Shawn for 5 hours (330ish-830ish). Beautiful afternoon, Sunny w/ little wind here and there. We pretty much made a lap around the main lake in the 5 hours we were out. Right off the bat my chatterbait get walloped. A nice 3lb 6oz Largemouth to start things off. Then no bite for 2 hours until Shawn get into a 2lber on a jig. Bite would be sporadic the rest off the night. Shawn over the next hour and a half or so got about 1/2 dozen Larry's including a 1-3/4lber. I finally get things going again with a 1-3/4lber that drills my chatterbait. A little later My chatterbait gets smoked again with a nice 2lb 9oz Larry. He ate it right up to the blade! Shawn would get a couple more smaller guys. We finished up the night at around the ramp/spillway area. Pitch a jig in, and again absolutely gets pounded, cross its eyes, and finish the night with best of the day. a 4lb beautiful, who took mine jig hook in the tongue. A little blood, but she swam away just fine, even splashing me on the way out. Our best 5 was about 14lbs. Good quality, healthy fish. Thanks again Shawn! "Keep Calm and Fish On"
I have never done well at lower side of dam. I mark tons of fish but it never produces. To the right of the falls is good. The hump at the point heading toward river is good. West side of lake has some rocky areas, that is where I have seen most smallies, In winter I have seen them down at 45 feet, right where the top water flows. Lower lake is meromictic ( look it up) one of less than 20 lakes in US. It has unique conditions. I dont go there often anymore but trust me there are some giants in there. Last year I lost a bass right at boats edge. Would of been my PB. Its frustrating place to fish. Upper is more fun and predictable.
I caught a striper there
I know Kman has caught smallies in lower.
You know if the Lower side of dam is a good spot for smallies? I'll always throw a few casts on lower side if I'm there. But, haven't caught anything?
