11-11-11: Dock Bass

Today I had an hour window to throw some casts from the ramp near my house. I had been out on the boat the last 2 afternoons for a couple hours each day and managed to catch around 10 bass with the biggest couple being around 2 pounds. I did miss a couple big bites near some submerged trees which had me a bit frustrated, until today.

I wasn't expected much, having fished from the launch on a half dozen occassions when I was either too lazy to get out in the boat or just didn't have enough time. I had caught a couple bass on the jig and worms but nothing for the wall of fame. It was windy and the water level is down about a foot now so I figured I would throw a variety of light jigs and creature baits and work them off a couple drop offs. I had been fishing for about 20 minutes and all I had felt to that point was a minor tap. I went to old faithful, the frog and threw it towards the only dock in casting distance. On the 3rd toss, after I retrieved past the dock it got to a patch of leaves and as it went through a vicious splash missed the lure- okay Lawrence you have my undivided attention now! I went back in there two more times without any reaction. I switched back to a creature bait and landed it a couple inches from the edge of the dock. After a few yo yo's off the bottom the bass struck again except this time I was able to set it. The bass gave an intense fight during the reel in, taking drag on several stretches of the retrieve especially when it was close to me on the shore. It must have peeled 5 feet of line 3 different times when it was within 10 feet of me and I was lucky when it ran out of gas and I had her lip locked on the launch. I was surprised at how hard it fought for this time of year, the cold water didn't seem to affect it. The dock bass weighed in at 5 pounds 5 ounces and I let her go after a few photo's. That could be the last larry for me until the ice but ya never know when they'll decide to strike.

  • Super report and nice Movemder hog! My frog has been filed for like a month lol. Maybe I was a bit to hasty as I have not taken any top waters with me on the last 3 or 4 trips.
